Laser treatment for Vaginal Atrophy
Vaginal atrophy is thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls due to your body having less estrogen. Vaginal atrophy occurs most often after menopause but can happen before menopause. For many women, vaginal atrophy not only makes intercourse painful, but also leads to distressing urinary symptoms
At Skintology Health and Wellness Centre we use a laser device to treat vaginal atrophy. This is a fast, effective, non-invasive, incision-less procedure for vaginal tightening with no undesired side effects. During the procedure a special attachment, similar to a speculum used during a pap test, is inserted into the vagina. Through this attachment the vaginal canal is treated with short laser pulses through a small hand piece. The laser heats the vaginal tissue in a special way that causes the stimulation of new collagen. This stimulation will lead to more collagen formation and a tighter, younger feel to the vagina. The procedure only takes between 15-30 minutes. There can be some discomfort that is described as a mild pain or a burning, itching sensation. However, this discomfort is usually minimal and is very well tolerated.
There is absolutely no downtime with this procedure. In fact, you can even book the procedure over your lunch hour, and then go back to your day. It is recommended to refrain from sexual activity for 24-48 hours. For most of patients, a single session is sufficient for significant tightening of the vaginal canal. If needed, the treatment may be repeated after one month.
Results vary, but for many there is a noticeable difference within the first week. The full result will take up to four weeks as new collagen continues to develop.
Laser treatment for Stress Urinary Incontinence
Many women experience a condition called stress urinary incontinence (SUI). SUI occurs when your bladder leaks urine during physical activity or exertion. It may happen when you cough, laugh, jump, sneeze, or exercise. SUI is most commonly cause by vaginal childbirth and hormonal changes due to age. The stretching and increased laxity of the tissues causes the bladder to sag over the anterior wall of the vagina, which can interfere with the proper function of the bladder when it is full.
At Skintology Health and Wellness Centre we use a laser device to treat stress urinary incontinence. The treatment is delivered through the vagina, where short laser pulses cause tightening of the connective tissue around the vagina wall and pelvic floor. The shrinking and tightening of the vaginal and pelvic floor tissues results in greater support to the bladder and urethra, and the return of normal continence function. Most patients report that there is mild discomfort during the treatment, though some may experience moderate discomfort if they are more sensitive.
There are some immediate results, however the full results can take time as the body’s healing process continues to regenerate new collagen.
