Chemical Peels

At Skintology Health and Wellness Centre, we provide some of the best chemical peels on the market to rejuvenate your skin and treat any unwanted skin conditions. Chemical peels at the hands of expert skincare professionals are highly effective. Moreover, they are non-invasive procedures that deliver impressive results for a variety of skin concerns with minimal downtime.

While it may sound intimidating, chemical peels are safe and painless when performed by a qualified professional.

Chemical Peels May Help To Improve The Following Skin Conditions:

  • Uneven skin tone and blotchiness

  • Rough skin texture

  • Freckles

  • Melasma

  • Sun-damage

  • Dull texture

  • Acne

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Scars

  • Rosacea

There are three types of chemical peels which target the different layers of your skin:

1. Superficial Peels

Light superficial peels or lunchtime peels target the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) using mild acids such as salicylic acid, trichloroacetic acid and alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA).

Do these ingredients sound familiar?

These acids are often active ingredients in skincare products that offer gentle exfoliation. However, they’re in significantly weaker potencies to allow for everyday use.

Superficial peels are an excellent introduction to the world of chemical peels and are most commonly applied to address fine lines, mild acne, dull complexion and dryness.

2. Medium-Depth Peels

As the name suggests, medium-depth chemical peels use stronger solutions of acids (such as trichloroacetic or glycolic acid) to penetrate the skin’s deeper layers from your epidermis and the dermis (middle layer).

Because medium-depth peels penetrate more deeply, it’s more effective at tackling challenging skin concerns — such as more severe acne scarring, deep wrinkles and uneven skin complexion.

It’s perfectly normal to experience a slight tingling or heating sensation on your skin during the procedure. You also might experience some redness and discolouration up to 48 hours after your treatment. The active ingredients are doing their job long after your appointment to remove dead skin cells and stimulate new skin cell turnover for a brighter and more even complexion.

Deep Chemical Peels

Deep chemical peels fully penetrate the dermis (middle layer of skin) with a higher concentration of acids.

This treatment is performed by physicians as a minimally invasive procedure to address deeper wrinkles, severe sun damage and scarring.

Your doctor will often prescribe a pre-treatment of up to eight weeks before the procedure to condition the skin to tolerate the intense concentration of acids, as well as speed the healing process.

While this whole procedure may sound extreme, one deep chemical treatment peel can produce dramatic, long-lasting results.

  • Don’t get put off by the term chemical. Our highly qualified staff first gets to know you and your skin to recommend the safest treatment plan that delivers the best results.

Your chemical peel at our Newmarket clinic should feel relaxing and many patients find it quite enjoyable.

When you lay back to decompress in our chair, your skin is thoroughly cleansed with an agent that removes excess oils.

Depending on your skin concerns, one or more chemical solutions such as glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, retinoic acid, lactic acid or phenol may be gently applied onto the skin.

The application produces a separation and eventually peels off layers of skin (sometimes visible, but often invisible or “micro” peeling), enabling fresh, rejuvenated skin to the surface.

During the chemical peel, you may experience a warm to a hot sensation that lasts about 5-10 minutes, followed by a tingling sensation. A deeper peel may be more painful and require medication during or after the procedure.

  • Depending on the treatment, you may experience a mild to intense sunburn-like sensation after your session, but it should subside quickly.

Chemical peels make your epidermis extremely sensitive to sun exposure. Because you’ve removed the old layer of skin to reveal new skin, you must avoid direct sun exposure to prevent damaging your skin.

  • At Skintology, we always start our treatment plans with a comprehensive consultation to get to know you and your skin concerns before creating a unique program to suit your skin and budget.

During this consultation, we’ll discuss the specific peel and the chemicals we’ll use on your face to determine if anything could interfere with the treatment, such as acne medication, allergies, or if you’re prone to scarring.

Before your chemical peel appointment, you should avoid:

Any product or topical medication that contains retinol for at least 48 hours

Waxing or any hair removal products on your face

    Bleaching your hair

Facial exfoliation (up to a week before)

We may also recommend topical creams or lotions to improve the treatment. In addition, we could prescribe an antiviral medication if you’re prone to blistering or cold sore breakouts. Pain killers may also be necessary depending on the procedure.

It’s also a good idea to arrange a ride home after medium or deep chemical peels, as you may be quite sensitive after your appointment.

  • The Common Side-Effects Of Chemical Peels Include:

    Sensitivity to sun

    Stinging/burning sensation

    Redness

    Swelling

However, these side-effects should subside within 48 hours.

Although very low, there is a risk of scarring, lightening of skin tone, or infection, but these risks only exist with more potent chemical peel treatments. To reduce the chances of these risks, a thorough consultation is critical.

Before any treatment, discuss your medical history, unusual scarring tendencies, previous sun damage to the face or recurring cold sores with your practitioner. This ensures the proper precautions can be taken to minimize risks and to help you achieve the best results.

  • This will depend on your skin condition and treatment plan that you will discuss with your practitioner.

Superficial chemical peels are more gentle and can be applied as often as every two to four weeks, depending on how your skin reacts to the peels and your desired results.

You don’t need to visit our office as frequently for deeper peels, as they usually produce more dramatic results that also last longer.
